    Course Description:

    Construction of single-family, detached homes is quite a process. From planning to application to execution to inspection, there are many steps along the way. Like a dance, a beautiful performance comes from smooth steps timed by everyone in the group. Mutual understanding and respect for each professional involved and a good grasp of the choreography helps ensure no one trips up. Learn the steps of building a new home in this unique class. No formal wear required!

    WYAPT 2022 Virtual Winter Training

    Deck Design and Review Course for the Permit Technician

    Tuesday, December 6th 8:30am – 4:30pm for 0.6 CEUs

    Course Description: New prescriptive deck design codes have been developed and fine-tuned since the 2015 IRC edition, with more developments on the horizon. Learn all the details and design flexibility in the 2021 IRC for deck construction from someone that was part of their development. This course will take you through a sample deck plan review that will capture a broad extent of what Section R507 in the 2021 IRC can offer your community.

    Do you have an eye for design? Are you creative? We need your help to design this year's ICC Annual Conference Shirts and Trading Pins.

    We have a few themes ideas for the Annual Conference that will be held in Louisville, KY in September. We are looking for designs based on the suggested themes or if you have have better theme, show us! Every year we design a T-shirt and trading pin based on the location of the ICC Annual Conference. See examples below from previous conferences.

    Proposed Themes:

    -Kentucky Derby related - Permit Techs get you across the finish line!

    -Kentucky Bourbon related - A toast to Permit Techs!

    -Louisville Slugger related - PTN goes to bat for your permit techs!

    T-Shirts should be no more than 3-4 colors including the shirt color. Preferably the design should work on multiple shirt colors.

    Pins can be multiple colors.

    Please include Louisville, KY and 2022 in the design.

    Deadline for design submittal is July 8, 2022. Please submit all design ideas to info@permittechnation.org with a subject line of 2022 ABM Design. Please be sure to include your contact information.

    The ICC ABM Planning Committee will review the designs and the winner of each design chosen (T-Shirt & Pin) will receive a free education class of the winners choice that is offered by PermitTechNation. Winners will be notified via email in July.

    Glen Miller and Dan Carlson of Chemeketa Community College held a brief presentation during the PTN Meeting on February 16, 2022 to introduce our members to the Building Inspection Technology Program. This program offers either a 1-Year Building Inspector Certificate or Associates of Applied Science degree in Building Inspector Technology.

    The Chemeketa Chapter of the ICC (Student Chapter) is seeking donations to establish a scholarship for this program. Their goal is $10,000. During the meeting they shared that they were at $2,500. PTN made a motion to donate $1,000 to the scholarship fund.

    PTN would like to challenge all ICC Chapters to donate towards the scholarship fund. No amount is too small.

    Earn a Building Inspector certificate (one-year)*

    The Building Inspector certificate provides students with knowledge and skills in commercial and residential building codes that are necessary for entry level inspector positions. Application of code knowledge in the inspection process is stressed throughout the four terms of the certificate program. The certificate is designed for students with extensive and diverse construction background or for those currently working in the building inspection industry that want to move into an entry level inspector position.

    Earn your AAS degree and begin your career as a building code professional

    Through classwork, hands-on instruction and internships, Chemeketa’s Building Inspection program gives you the education and skills needed to launch your career as a construction plans examiner and building inspector.

    You will earn your Building Inspection Technology Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in 21 months while you prepare to take International Code Council (ICC) certification exams. With your degree and certifications, you may be eligible to work anywhere in the world ICC certifications are accepted.

    Career opportunities

    From reviewing construction blueprints to performing on site inspections, code professionals work in a variety of positions that ensure residential and commercial construction meets building codes and ordinances. You could work in an exciting career as a—

    • Building official—Associates or bachelor’s degree preferred

    Oversees the building inspection department of a city or county. Manages budgets, operations and personnel and act as the chief code compliance officer for their area.

    • Building inspector—Associates degree

    Makes professional judgements about whether a building meets building code requirements.

    • Plans examiners—Associates degree

    Verifies that blueprints and construction documents meet code requirements prior to construction of the building.

    • Specialty inspector—Associates degree

    A building inspector that specializes in a specific field of construction such as electrical, concrete or other specialty area.

    • Permit technicians—High school diploma or GED

    Reviews and processes construction project permits including processing permit fees, providing department information to the public and reviewing permit applications.

    Potential salary

    Your salary will depend on your location and certification level. In Oregon you can expect to make—

    • $22–29 per hour (entry level)
    • $36 per hour, $74,565 annually (average)
    • $42–49 per hour, up to $87,000–$103,000 annually (experienced and multi-certified) 
    • Building officials and managers can earn much more

    Classes are primarily held remotely through the Chemeketa Polk Center in Dallas, OR. Approximate two-year AAS program cost–

    Tuition and fees (100 credits) $13,200

    Class fees $2,040

    Equipment and supplies $375

    Total $18,315

    4. Apply for financial aid; learn how at go.chemeketa.edu/financialaid (Although applying for financial aid is not required, we encourage you to do so. The process can take up to 16 weeks so apply as soon as possible.)

    5. Submit your completed program application; visit go.chemeketa.edu/ buildinginspection. Application opens Feb. 1 for fall term start

    6. If accepted (notified in late June), attend the Building Inspection advising/orientation the summer before classes start

    7. Building Inspection Technology coursework is cohort-based and starts each fall

    At today's PermitTechNation (PTN) monthly meeting, Cindi Somers introduced Camp Corral which is a 501 (c)(3) corporation that is a free, one-of-a-kind summer camp for children of wound, ill, injured or fallen military service members. Cindi would like to thank the attendees for approving a $1000 donation to Camp Corral, which will sponsor one Veteran's child to camp! PTN is the best for giving a hand up to those in need and it is appreciated! 

    Cindi would like to challenge all state Permit Tech chapters, associations or sub-committees to also donate to Camp Corral, especially if a Camp is located within your state. Please check out the attached for dates and locations of all Camps. If your chapter, association or sub-committee does make a donation, please send donation info to education@permittechnation.org. Thank you!
